de HAVILLAND TIGER MOTH
One of the world's most famous training aircraft, the Tiger Moth remained in service with the R.A.F. for over 15 years. First introduced in February 1932, it was still used as a standard elementary trainer as late as 1947 in Flying Training Command and until 1951 with the R.A.F Volunteer Reserve. In Malaya, it was also the trainer aircraft for the MAAF in the 1940's and 50's.
The Museum's Tiger Moth was obtained by kind arrangement of Mr Colin Dodds of British Aerospace. Mr Dodds himself is a current Moth pilot and flies several other vintage aircraft as a hobby. This particular Tiger Moth was lying in a barn somewhere in Scotland. It was bought by British Aerospace and donated to the Museum. It came literally in pieces with several parts missing or broken. The Museum staff, had to learn old technology to restore this wood and fabric aircraft to its present exhibition standard.
