Heron

de HAVILLAND HERON

The Heron was introduced into the RMAF in August 1963 to supplement the communications role. Their services were terminated in 1979. All three Herons were sold off. The Heron has four Rolls Royce Gipsy Queen 30 Mk 2 engines; and was thus bought for its safety aspects. The Museum exhibit, however, is not an original RMAF Heron; it was acquired through the kind arrangement of the Chief of the Sri Lanka Air Force. The aircraft came without engines, since the SLAF Herons had a flat-four Riley conversion engines, instead of the Gipsy Queens. The Museum restored the aircraft to its original RMAF colours and Gipsy engines.
