No. 4 Squadron RMAF was formed with the arrival of Handley Page Dart Herald aircraft on November 8, 1963. The first aircraft of the squadron was flown from the United Kingdom by its first squadron commander, Squadron Leader D R Bryan.
Eight Heralds were operating from 1963 to 1976.The aircraft were mainly used for transportation of troops between Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak. The aircraft were also employed for psychological warfare during the Indonesian Confrontation and for reconnaissance flight. These aircraft were replaced by the Hercules C-130H in 1976, and sold to a British firm -- Channel Express (Air Services) Ltd -- who still managed to keep these aircraft flying.
The Museum is yet to have a Herald in its collection. Sadly, arrangements with Channel Express to have one Herald donated to the RMAF when they phase-out their Herald aircraft in 1999, fell through.
