PM Visits RMAF Museum

PM viewing homepage demoKuala Lumpur Monday, 28 July 97. The RMAF Museum is honoured by a visit by the Prime Minister, YAB Dato Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad, who has just returned from a two months working holiday abroad. This visit is in conjunction with the flagging off for the Great Malaysia Air Rally and the first flight of the Rakan Muda / MEAA kitplane "Zodiac" from the RMAF Museum premises.
Coincident with the visit, the PM launched the Museum's homepage. This homepage is the first for any museum in Malaysia.

Great Malaysian Air Rally

Prime Minister

Another first of its kind, the Great Malaysian Air Rally comprising of numerous light single and two seater aircraft from neighbouring countries and within Malaysia to fly from one town to another. The participating aircraft were flagged off by the Prime Minister from the RMAF Museum at the Air Base Kuala Lumpur on 28 July 97. The route took them to Melaka, then to Kuala Trengganu, then Ipoh, then Alor Star and finally they flew into Langkawi on 4 Aug 97. Some didn't make it because of the heavy haze at Ipoh and Alor Star.
Picture shows the PM signing his name on the Zodiac kitplane built under the "Rakan Muda" scheme. This aircraft took part in the Rally. Click here for more Rally photos.

AUGUST 1997

Langkawi Fly-In

Langkawi Fly-In (dubbed "Oshkosh East") is the first light craft convention ever held in Asia and it provided an opportunity to showcase sports aviation as a hobby, highlighting a wide spectrum of activities for acquiring in-depth knowledge on aviation. The programs aimed to gather all the flying clubs and academies of ASEAN countries, Hong Kong and Australia to share their thoughts and experiences on handling and flying an aircraft. This event was successfully held from 4 Aug to 8 Aug 97.

RC Model Aircraft "Fun-Fly" at the Museum

The "Fun-Fly" of radio controlled aircraft by the KMKLS -- Kelab Modelkraf Kuala Lumpur Selangor -- on Sunday, 24 Aug 97 at the Museum was a great success. An unexpected crowd of some 2,000 adults and children were there; some enthusiasts came from as far as Singapore. About 60 model aircraft -- fixed wing and helicopters -- of all shapes and sizes displayed their capabilities; or rather their handler's capabilities in controlling their model aircraft through the various flight manouvres, including tight aerobatic stunts. The youngest flyer was a 10 year old boy, while the oldest was a 60+ gentleman from Singapore.

With this success, the Museum and KMKLS are encouraged to organise a few more similar events; and maybe make the "Fun-Fly" into a regular feature of the Museum calendar of activities. Click here for photos of the event.
